A Tribute to Rodgers and Hammerstein
It is always a sad note when a true rare TV classic becomes all but lost. Recently this old kinescope was discovered rotting away in a pile of junk. It is truly a unique look back at early TV history.
This was the first television special broadcast on all four major networks (CBS, NBC, ABC and Dumont), this rare event collected most of the original cast members to perform live. Trivia: First filmed appearance of Florence Henderson and last filmed appearance of Ezio Pinza. All that remains is this rare kinescope.
While the picture quality is below par (average‘s 7 to 7.5) , it is more then worth viewing as the sound quality is quite good and it is that extremely rare opportunity to see some of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s greatest numbers as sung by the stars who made them famous including Mary Martin and Ezio Pinsa in SOUTH PACIFIC, Yul Brynner in THE KING AND I, Gordon MacRae in OKALAHOMA plus all the other broadway hits with stars like John Raitt, Jan Clayton, Bill Hayes, Patricia Morison, Tony Martin, Rosemary Clooney and Florence Henderson. Also joining in the fun are Jack Benny, Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy, Ed Sullivan and Groucho Marx along with Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein.
