EDGAR WALLACE MYSTERIES - Volume 5

Edgar Wallace was a British novelist, playwright, and journalist who produced popular detective and suspense stories and was in his time "the king" of the modern thriller. He is the author who created one of the screen's greatest monsters - KING KONG. Wallace's literary output - 175 books, 24 plays, and countless articles and review sketches have undermined his reputation as a fresh and original writer. In England in the 1920s Wallace was said to be the second biggest seller after the Bible.

THE RIVALS Based on a novel by Edgar Wallace, this crime drama centers on two car thieves who inadvertently interfere with a kidnapping when they steal the vehicle that contains the ransom for the daughter of a Swedish tycoon.

THE SETUP The Set-Up was another in the long-running British second-feature series based on the works of Edgar Wallace. Maurice Denham plays a businessman who blackmails ex-con Brian Peck into committing a robbery. Peck is told to break into Denham's house and steal some valuable jewels so that the businessman can collect the insurance. But when Peck arrives at the crime scene, he comes across the body of Denham's wife--and is promptly accused of the murder. Inspector Jackson (John Carson) is the dogged detective who unravels the insidious plot woven by the crafty Denham.

THE SHAREOUT Bernard Lee, better known as "M" in the James Bond movies, makes one of his periodic appearances as novelist Edgar Wallace's diligent Scotland Yard investigator protagonist in The Share Out. This time Lee takes on a clever blackmailing ring which preys upon above-suspicion government officials.
